Certified Protection Professional

The Certified Protection Professional (CPP®) credential provides demonstrable proof of knowledge and management skills in seven key domains of security. Those who earn the CPP are ASIS board-certified in security management.

Eligibility Requirements

Nine years of security work experience, with at least three of those years in responsible charge* of a security function. Or a bachelor's degree, or higher, and seven years of security work experience with at least three of those years in responsible charge* of a security function.

About the Examination

The CPP exam consists of 200 scored multiple-choice questions, and may contain 25 "pre-test" (unscored) questions randomly distributed throughout the examination, for a total of 225 questions. The time allowed takes into consideration the review of pre-test items.

The examination covers tasks, knowledge and skills in seven broad domains that have been identified by CPP’s as the major areas involved in security management.

Definitions

Experience is defined as having:

Knowledge and understanding as a security professional in the protection of assets. That is in either the public or private sectors, within the criminal justice system, Government intelligence or investigative agencies.

Experience and proficiency can also be characterised and associated with companies, associations, within Government, or other organisations providing services or products. This also can include consulting firms, provided the duties and responsibilities substantively relate to the design, evaluation, and application of systems, programmes, or equipment, or development and operation of services, for protection of assets in the private or public sectors.

Expertise as a full-time educator within the faculty of an accredited educational institution, provided the responsibilities for courses and other duties relate primarily to knowledge areas pertinent to the management and operation of protection of asset programmes in the public or private sectors.

Responsible charge

Being conscientious and trustworthy is defined as the responsibility exercised by an individual in a management position who makes decisions for the successful completion of objectives, without reliance upon directions from a superior as to specific methods. However, an applicant need not have held a supervisory position, as long as the positions on which the application relies have specifically included responsibility for independent decisions, or actions. If "responsible charge" is not based on supervisory responsibilities, then security programme management remits and duties must be clearly shown. Generally, this excludes such positions as patrol officer or the equivalent.
